Pan de Muerto
Pan de Muerto is one of the most traditional breads that is celebrated from October 31 to November 2. While many may think that there is only one type of Day of the Dead bread, but that would be a lie. Depending on the regions of Mexico, there may be several bread differences depending from one state to another. Juquilita Bakery offers 3 types of Day of the Dead bread. The most recognized bread is one that is coated with sugar and has a cross shape on top of the bread. The second one is similar to the most popular with the difference of red or pink sugar on top. This colored bread comes from the state of Puebla. Lastly, the Oaxacan-style egg yolk bread contains a face in each bread that is made out of flour and painted with food coloring. Although the Yema (egg yolk) Bread is the most preferred in the state of Oaxaca, during the Day of the Dead season, egg yolk bread is a bread that is offered all year round with the exception of the face not in the bread anymore.
Pan de Yema or Egg yolk bread is an exceptional type of rich and sweet bread. What makes it a distinct bread is that it contains egg yolks but aniseed as well. This type of bread can be served at any time but is best paired with authentic Mexican Hot chocolate that consists of cacao beans, sugar, and almonds.
